Product Description

The Fishman SBT-E is a passive pickup favored by many professional solo guitarists. Attaches to the top of your guitar and senses the soundboard's micro vibrations to reproduce full, natural response. Includes pickup, 3 double-sided adhesive pads, and 1/4" Fishman Switchjack stereo endpin jack.

This is a fine passive pickup system. It works very well with a Digitech RP50 Modeling Guitar Processor (available from Custom Guitar's Friend). The RP50 is used as the preamp. Set the pickup/wah selector on the RP50 to "SH". This sounds complicated (the RP50 takes a while to learn) but the beautiful sound is worth learning the Fishman/Digitech system.

.I have a relatively inexpensive (about $400) classical guitar that I decided to experiment with, as I needed one with a pickup. I tried this pickup out, and was pleasantly surprised. I have used "contact" pickups before (Barcus-Berry, DiMarzio) and found them either fragile and weak or too metallicl-sounding. This one, at least, sounds like my guitar is actually made of wood. The sound is acceptable, though not like a good mic pointed at the sound hole of a good guitar, and with a Fishman Platinum Pro is tweakable to tame the resonant bottom end of the mic's response. The trick with this pickup is installation and placement - you have to try several locations on the top (Fishman provides several temporary adhesive pads), then transfer that location to the inside (it will still sound a bit different), ream an endpin hole, install the jack, adhere the pickup. A permanent adhesive works best, but makes it critical that you place the pickup where you need it to be. If you have really bulky hands or any doubts about your woodworking skills (get a telescoping mirror), then have a pro install this for you.

.I've had an old classical guitar from the 1970s and wanted to have it heard without a microphone on it.This pickup was pretty easy to install and sounds good through a Crate amp.Works fine and pleased with the sound.
