The Recording Custom series now offers some of ’s finest snare drums, using Steve Gadd's valuable input to its maximum. It adds a superb consistency, allowing drummers to fully utilize the sound functionality of the kit.
The 14 x 5-1/2 in. model includes the snare wires that Steve prefers to use. This is a 10-strand snare wire with the middle four strands removed. This special snare wire enhances the cutoff of the sound, enabling the artist to produce a crisper staccato tone.
After repeated evaluations by Steve Gadd with design, the result was a groundbreaking snare drum. To date, ’s snare drums have traditionally had the metal center bead on the interior of the drum. However, has taken the step of fixing the center bead to the outside of the drum to produces a more open sound than our conventional drums, for crisp, articulate performance.
The heavy-duty Q-type strainer is robust whilst offering solid, stable and smooth operation, along with adjustment and snare replacement.

Just the sound I was looking for with the right batter head. Snare is an excellent build when compared to others I own at twice the price. First Aluminum snare I've owned but matched up well with my Dunnett Titanium drum kit. Didn't like the sound with the stock ambassador head, tried emperor but felt muffled. Happen to have a remo control sound X w center dot and the snare came alive with a perfect woody rim shots and excellent sensitivity. Again, sounds as good as any snare in my collection at twice the price. Perfect for live, studio or small club un-mic'd situations. Good all around performer.

.I've been wanting one of these all year after seeing pictures of the booth at Winter NAMM 2016. I don't buy a lot of gear but I've probably owned a dozen or so snare drums in my 30 plus years as a drummer and have never found that one snare drum that does it for me. After watching every video review I could find on the web, I finally pulled the trigger on the 14 x 6.5" model.
Lucky for me, Custom Guitars Friend had the drum in stock and it was at my front door in just two days via UPS Ground. I immediately swapped the stock heads for Evans Genera HD on top, Evans Hazy 300 on the bottom, and 24 Strand Puresound Custom Pro Series steel snare wires. This drum tuned up very easily thanks to the aluminum die-cast hoops . I believe that the hoops are a big contributor to this drum's great sound being that they are extremely rigid yet very light weight.
The first gig played with this drum was with my cover band at a local bar. We play rock for four hours so this was a great test. I tuned the drum somewhere in the medium to high range. It sounded fantastic and stayed in tune all night. I rim shot pretty much every back beat so I have to use lug locks on most snares to prevent detuning but not on this drum so far. The drum sounded bright and responsive and provided just the right amount of that "snarey" sound.
The second gig played with this drum was with my company band playing Christmas songs at a local senior citizen center. With this band, I play traditional grip to help keep volume low. I also play a few songs with brushes. The drum was sensitive and sounded just as good being played with a light touch as it did the other night getting hit hard. I am very impressed with this drum.
Thanks to for making such a great snare drum and not pricing it out of my reach!
