First off, let me cget this out of the way - DRUM HEADS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

I am using this drum with the stock reso head (plan on replacing it with an Evans Hazy) and an Evans Genera Dry batter head. The Genera is a head that does away with overtones and gives the drum a focused, punchy sound. Since steel snares often have undesirable overtones (this is no exception) I recommend using a dry head.

So onto the drum itself. For the money I paid, I could not be happier with this drum. With the heads I installed, plus a moon gel slapped on, this drum has a very powerful, focused sound that gives a solid crack with a bit of mid range sound as well. It seems a good ideas to tune this drum quite tight, although this drum seems easy to tune so you can put it almost anywhere you desire. It is certainly loud with the heads I have on it, and I can get a powerful, stage-worthy sound without doing constant rimshots. I have also recorded with this snare, and it sounds fantastic with good micropones and a little compression (a little audio engineering tip for you).

.This snare drum was given to me as an extra when I bought a used yamaha stage custom. I never used it, because it always had excessive ring. As I got better, I learned how to tune snares. I took off the old stock head and put a coated ambassador on top and a remo snare side on the bottom. I cranked up the bottow tight, and the top medium and this thing sing. I use it quite often in church and live shows. I have 11 snare drums, but this one still gets a lot of playing time. Great drum to get that loud crack with a lot of body, but on a budget... and you also get a heavy duty qaulity drum.

.this snare has been very useful in multiple genres of music and in all dynamic range. with the right combonation of heads you can make this snare sound great for anything you want to play

.You would swear your playing a Ludwig Supraphonic with this gem, beautifully made, fantastic sound, comes with a dampening ring and tuning key. You can't beat it, really at any price. Custom Guitars Friend got mine to me in four days and I'm very happy with their service.
Yamaha Stage Custom Steel Snare 14 x 6.5 in.
.I recently received the 6.5x14 version of this snare with a new (but discontinued) 4pc. Stage Custom Rock shell pack that features a 24" bass drum. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the kit included the Bonham-esque deep steel snare, as I was expecting a birch 5.5x14 unit. I see this is a hidden gem (specifically in the 6.5 inch deep model), as it features 10-lugs with 2.3mm rims. Outfitted with a Remo Coated Ambassador batter & Hazy Ambassador Snare-Side + Puresound 20-Strand Wires, this drum rivals most steel snares that are twice the cost or more. Big open sound and enough rim crack to shatter a glass. With light dampening (1/2 of a MoonGel pad), this baby had zero ring with a ton of sensitivity. With the 10 lugs & 2.3mm hoops, you can really crank the heads tight and make it sing. Couldn't be happier with this snare.

.I was skeptical because I ordered it online without hearing it first, but reading reviews helped me decide. Sounds awesome!

.Sounded great pretty much right or of the box. Included a muffling ring and a tuning key. Threw some moon gels on it to taste. I was able to tune up a good usable sound within a few minutes. I ordered a different head to go with it, but the one that came included sounded good enough that I'll just wait until it wears out to put the other one on.

Using this in a contemporary worship band in a small sanctuary (approx 30'w x60'l x10'h)

.I am trying different heads to find out what works best for me.I like this snare and would recommend it to my friends. For this price range if you are looking for a steel snare in this size configuration. By all means do buy the Stage Custom by .

.Counter hoops are cheap, thin and ugly but replacing with better ones like dw true hoops or die cast ones hoops is an easy way to add substance and body to the overall tone. The drum is bright and has a lot of ring but with right heads and proper tuning it sings beautifully. Lugs and shell are high quality and it tunes easily.
