Designed in conjunction with one of the founding fathers of thrash metal—highly acclaimed bassist David Ellefson of Megadeth—the 5-string David Ellefson CBX V QS is a beast of a bass. Bearing his personal touches, packed with enormous Jackson sound and the hyper-fast playability required by the fleet-fingered bassist, this instrument is a force to be reckoned with.
Redesigned ergonomic contours provide the perfect platform for launching a musical assault—the upper contour provides a comfortably stable anchor for pick or fingerstyle playing alike while the lower contour provides perfect balance when propped on a knee for monitor stands. The Jackson HiMass™ 5-string bridge sharpens your notes’ attack for extra punch and clarity, granting enhanced sustain without significantly altering the bass’ fundamental tone. An earth-shaking pair of EMG® HZ40 active humbucking pickups in the neck and bridge positions provide plenty of girth and cut as an active 3-band EQ bolsters their native power, shaping and refining it for maximum impact and versatility. The blend knob allows you to mix the pickups to your taste—add more neck pickup for a touch of warmth, or bring up the bridge pickup for more cut. Designed for highly technical lightspeed playing, the 12”-16” compound radius rosewood fingerboard flattens out as you move up the neck for increased playing comfort and speedy articulation.
This bass proudly displays Jackson’s distinctive style; all-black hardware, including everything from the bridge to the Jackson die-cast sealed tuning machines, durable gloss finish, pearloid sharkfin neck inlays, single ply white neck binding and Jackson’s signature pointed 5-In-Line headstock along with a silver “Fallout” logo and Ellefson’s signature embossed on the truss rod cover. Only one instrument is hardcore enough to keep pace with Ellefson’s technically demanding requirements—the Jackson David Ellefson CBX V QS—and now it can be yours.

I'm not really a metal guy but I've always loved the look of Jackson basses and guitars, so I finally decided to buy one. I was familiar with a few Megadeth songs but didn't know of David Ellefson by name, I just really liked the look of his signature model the most.
When it arrived the action was really high and the stock strings were not very good, so I took it to a guitar shop to have it set-up and put some D'addario nickel wound strings on it. Much better.
This bass is very comfortable to play. I love the jumbo frets, slim neck, and the string spacing is perfect for slapping, finger style, or picking. The sound is very bright and cuts through well, sort of like a Stingray but different. Definitely has some bite to it. The active EQ allows you to get just about any tone you want. The stock tuners seem to work fine and it stays in tune well.
Aesthetically this bass is very pleasing to the eyes. I love the quicksilver finish on the body and all the complimentary black hardware. The shark fin inlays and pointed head-stock really set it off. This bass will definitely stand out live, especially if you play in a country band.
I can't really think of many downsides. There is a wee bit of neck-dive but its hardly noticeable, just use a good strap. I'm not a big fan of basswood either, not because of tone but its a really soft wood so it can get dinged up more easily than other woods. Just have to be careful when you're rocking out.
I give it 4 stars but it's really more like 4.5, which is about the best you can expect for a bass in this price range. Which leads me to probably my biggest gripe about the Jackson bass line up -- all of their basses are either 500 or 5,000, with nothing in-between. I would have gladly payed for an upgraded version of this bass in the 1k - 2k range. I hope this is something Jackson will offer in the future.
