I'm mainly a guitar player that dabbles in playing other instruments. Lately I have taken a great interest in playing bass. This bass is a great starter bass for me. As a big Ibanez fan, I new I wouldn't be disappointed with this instrument.
For the money you can't beat it. I may replace the pickups someday, though. But it does play well and sounds good as it is. The Phat II circuit is a little to much for me. I just barely crack it open for a little fatter sound but you don't really need it.
It is a nice looking guitar with no flaws in the construction and finish. For the price, you can't really beat it.

.I purchased this instrument to start myself and my kids on bass. We are all slaves to the electric guitar, and we have a broad collection. My favorite two instruments are a BC Rich Pro X Mockingbird (amazing build quality and value, so-so pickups) and 25 year old Gibson Les Paul. This Ibanez bass is very pretty (the funky wood in the SM models is worth the extra fifty IMHO) and performs well... good pickups, decent action.
I was a little disappointed with the build quality... though there is nothing "wrong" with the instrument, it just doesn't hold a candle to the two guitars mentioned above in fit and finish. It's hard to put into words, but you probably know what i mean- sometimes when you hold an instrument, the feeling of "quality" comes off it in waves. You don't get that from this bass... it's decent, just not great. It's not as heavy as it looks like it should be, the neck attachment to the body looks a little cheap, the headstock is ok, but nothing special, plastic knobs, etc. etc.
If you are looking for a decent, nice looking bass in the "moderate" price range, this is a good choice. Just don't expect to be blown away by the overall quality.
