Product Description

The Fender J5 Telecaster is a new-millennial update of a timeless classic. Inspired by one of our favorite uber-shredders, John 5, the J5 Triple Tele Deluxe puts a fiendishly ferocious spin on the always-popular '70s-era Tele Deluxe design.

A study in black and chrome, the J5 electric guitar has three screaming hot high-output Enforcer humbucking pickups in a sleek black double-bound body adorned with a vintage tremolo bridge and a flash chrome pickguard guaranteed to blind 'em all the way in the back row.

Appointments include an alder body, gloss urethane finish maple neck with '60s C profile, matching black-painted large '70s-style Stratocaster headstock, bound top and back, black switch and tremolo arm tips, and the toggle switch mounted on upper bout.

Includes gig bag.

If I lost it, I'd buy another without a doubt!
I've been playing for years and have owned almost 30 guitars, so I have a lot to compare this to. Here goes...
Pros - Excellent pups. Although they're on the overwound side, Tele twang and compression are there. The bite of the bridge pup is missing, but it'll get you by. The neck is beautiful. The back is a medium C shape, the fretboard is flat and fast, and the frets are big enough to bend into tomorrow. Fit and finish is excellent all around. Stays in tune with a lot of whammy use.
Cons - It's a slight bit neck heavy. Take your hand off and the headstock heads south. The whammy bar hits the tone knob if you swing it back that far. The high E string pops out of the nut often. I might have to put a string tree on that. The middle pup might get in the way of your picking. I have to remember it's there so I don't hit it while playing.
The trem, switch, pots, pups, and tuners are all excellent quality. The wood has a nice ring. The frets are nicely done and level. Paint is great. All fit and finish is noteworthy.
There's a lot of hardware here for the price. It's a bit on the pricey side for a Mexi-made, but you get a lot too. This is a buy and drive guitar. There's no room for upgrades, as it's all here. Overall, it's a great playing and looking axe.

.Just received my J5 and played out with her tonight. This is a fantastic tele for the money! If you're looking for a versatile guitar that can delivers multiple tones, this is for you. The backers are nice and beefy on the neck but the bridge pup offers plenty of treble for solos. Unlike typical tele necks, the 12"radius will let you bend into tomorrow without fretting out and yet it's still a very comfortable neck for chording. This is coming from a guy with average sized hands. Sustain is incredible and this thing sounds amazing clean and even better with overdrive. I'm using a Visual Sound Double Trouble in conjunction with a T.Rex. Here's the bad: 1. this thing weighs about the same as a Les Paul. Enough said. Some people care about weight others don't. 2. It comes strung with lights and of course the tremolo is set up to accommodate. Be prepared to make an adjustment if you're going to play a heavier gauge string. 3. The enforcer pups do produce a little noise...especially when your signal is pushed so be sure to tweak your noise gate accordingly. The rest is nothing but sweet tone and great looks. Keep that microfiber cloth handy for the chrome! Bottom line. If you play out on a regular basis, this is a very solid and great sounding guitar. You won't be disappointed!

.This is one of the best off the cuff purchases I've ever made, and it brough me back into the Fender family. A super versitile guitar, the MIM J5 Tele can produce an almost limitless tone palate. Everything works. It stays in tune well, but as the previous reviewer corectly points out, the nut does NOT keep the strings in place during heavy play. A string tree or locking nut is a must right off the bat.

The truth is, many of the higher end MIM guitars in the Fender line are starting to rival USA Fenders in terms of quality, while being MUCH more interesting. Though I play bass primarily, I do enjoy jamming on this guitar, and I have played it live a few times. I had zero problems with it staying in tune, even after heavy use of teh whammy bar over several months! That is a mirical of Baby Jesus! I love Tele's, and I am always looking for something cool, real, and versitile in a Tele bodied guitar. This was an immediate Ahh Ha! moment for me when I saw it, picked it up, and then started playing it. Yes the pickups are a bit overwound. I like that. I do wish there was a bit more bit and snarl in the bridge P/U. Bit I can easily overcome that with my pedal board (though I'd rather not). I'll tell you what, blending the neck and middle P/U makes for some warm sweet tone and sounds. Totally dig it. I can go from playing Foolish Game right into Back in Black with this guitar, no problem!

I can't think of many other guitars I would want more than this one, especially in a live sound situation, for even five hundred more. Now, only if they would offer it in a V neck...

.As it ships, the guitar's strength are its playability, overall neck and body construction (solid, but I did have to shim the neck slightly), its looks, and the overall concept (triple-HB tele!?). However, the quality of the components is not what it should be at this price point. It has personality, but I had to make a couple modifications for it to live up to its billing. I bought it because I love teles and I love the scale length and nut width this model has available and it just looked too cool (to me).

The pickups are good, but not great. I swapped them out with Harmonic Design Z90's in the neck and at the bridge. Now it sounds amazing. If you like a muddier, less clear sound (that's not sarcastic--some people just prefer it), leave in the HBs.

There's no way around the fact that the stock saddles are terrible. Within a couple gigs, the strings had worn ruts into several of them that had the strings breaking all the time (not a problem if you don't play all that hard or all that often). I replaced them with a set of Graph Tech saddles and everything is copacetic down there-sounds awesome, plenty of resonation and sustain.

The 3-way switch is also junk. I've had to open up the pickguard and re-bend the tines so that it makes solid contact. I haven't gotten around to replacing it with a burlier switch, but I plan to.

Don't get me wrong, I love this guitar. Given the price, I would have returned it by now if I didn't. As I currently have it set up, I am dreaming about playing it all day long (and I've had it for 2+ years now). But don't expect it to live up your expectations right out off the shelf; it will need some TLC.

.Out of the box, it wasn't playable. Tuned down and the truss rod was in full relief. No real issues once those were addressed and the neck had settled - and the string action was perfect. The worst issue is the 3 Way Selector Switch. Very stiff which means it snaps hard into place. This will require taking off the Pick guard to address - deducting one star for that.

Visually this is a stunning guitar in person. Chrome and Black with white binding is real nice.

Tone wise, the issue for me was that the tone differential between the 3 pickups was small. One: These are big pickups. Two: There is less than a 1/2 inch to separate them. Switching between the Bridge and Neck pickups presented a nominal change in tone - either Clean or with Gain. Fortunately, there are 4 height adjustment screws for each pickup. It took me a while, but I have the perfect setup and there is definitely a much more defined change in tone now between the 3 pickups.

On the big plus side, these pickups deliver some real clean highs and mid tones. I was very impressed to be able to discern every string, even with high gain/distortion applid. The Neck and Middle pickup are the Enforcer™ "Wide Range" Humbuckers which explains a lot, and the Bridge has the Standard Enforcer™ Humbucker. I'll add, interesting choices for placement.

A bit of a surprise is how well this Tele stays in tune with the 6-Saddle American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo. I used it pretty vigorously in my first trials after I had set up everything and found it held its tune very well. I'm not a notorious Dive Bomber, but this Trem system definitely holds up nice for my playing.

Fenders site mentions it is shipped with 9's. Mine was received with 10's which I prefer. The guitar plays lean and is buzz free with low action.
