Product Description

The Fender '65 Super Reverb Combo Amp is a long overdue addition to Fender's Vintage Reissue series. Here's a faithful re-creation of the legendary and highly collectible Blackface Super Reverb from the 1960s. This 45W, all-tube combo with 4 x 10" Jensen speakers, tube reverb, and vibrato has long been considered one of the best amps to "crank up" for unmiked club gigs or on the concert stage. The all-time bluesy, funky rocker! Includes 2-button footswitch.

Designed to sound as close to the original as possible, the ˜65 Reissues are assembled in Corona, California and feature Jensen speakers (One C12K for the Deluxe and two C12Ks for the Twin, four P10Rs for the Super and one C10R for the Princeton), Schumacher transformers, traditional tremolo and tube-driven reverb to create that classic, "Blackface" sound so many players desire. They do have PCBs (Printed Curcuit Boards), as opposed to the original's "hand-wired" circuitry, but the components (capacitors and resistors) are the same values as amps from that period. They also have hand-wired tube sockets and other parts for added strength.

Tonal Characteristics: Bright, scooped midrange that is known as the "Blackface" sound, pronounced "Wine Glass" highs from the Jensen speakers and a slightly more polite power amp for crystal cleans that can also be cranked for great overdriven tones.

The Fender Super Reverb amp (reissue) is the 'best amp' that Fender has to offer in their inventory at this time (in my opinion). This reissue amp is identical in sound to the 'original' blackface released decades ago. The tone is absolutely excellent (loud or soft). The tone controls are very sensitive and provide plenty of headroom to teak the tone. However with me, I simply run all the tone controls on "5" (Vibrato channel). I get what I want from that basic setting. The 'bright' switch is very sensitive and pushes the ultra-high's through nicely. Even though this amp is physically 'bigger' than a Twin Reverb, it is actually a little lighter. It is around 55 or 57 pounds. So, it's 'heavy, and it's 'big'. BUT… it's GOOD SOUNDING! The reverb circuit is especially high quality. For some reason, the reverb on a Super Reverb amp sounds better than on other Fender amps (including the Twin). It's probably because of the 10" speakers, as they are projecting the frequency which is closely linked with the reverb circuit. Even though the Super is rated at 45 watts, it gets as LOUD as a Twin Reverb at 85 watts. Why? Because the 4=10" speakers push more 'air' than the 2-12" of a Twin. So it gets LOUD, and it breaks up much nicer than a Twin as well. DON'T change the speakers! They are designed for this amp! If you start messing with the speakers, you'll lose the tone that this amp has to offer. With the reverb, I only have to set the reverb knob at "3" to really get a nice deep reverb depth effect. On some other Fender amps, you have to push it all the way to "10" to get the reverb 'front-and-center'. One thing I really like about this Super Reverb amp is that is has all the original tube circuitry. This includes tubes for the reverb, tremolo, AND a rectifier tube. Having a rectifier tube (rather than a solid state rectifier) is very important. This is because the rectifier tube produces the 'compression' that is typical of old amps. This natural compression is not there with amps that use a solid state rectifier circuit. I believe the Fender Deluxe reissue uses a rectifier tube as well… but I don't think any of the other Fender amps use the actual rectifier tube circuit, including the Twin Reverb reissue. I have even read reviews where the owner actually removed the rectifier tube and had a solid state circuit put in! Iche! With all due respect to that user, why would you even do this? Critical musicians pay big bucks to get that rectifier tube in the circuit of their amp, because it produces such a nice tone. Custom Guitars go out these days and spend hundreds of dollars on a 'compression stomp box'. Hey folks, just use a tube amp that has a rectifier tube! So, all in all… if you want an amp that will take you through the duration of your music career, go with the Fender Super Reverb reissue! You won't be disappointed. You can play ANYWHERE with this amp. And anywhere you play, people will always recognize this icon as one of the 'legs' of the Fender Heritage. Yes it's big. Yes it's heavy (not as heavy as a Twin). Yes it's expensive (more than the Hot Rod series, even more than the Twin). But guess what? It's worth it! I've owned many amps in my days. Actually had about 4 or 5 Twins, and even 3 Super Reverbs before this current reissue. Because I was a 'crazy kid', buying and selling guitars and amps was just routine activity. Now that I'm in my 'senior years' as a musician… no more buying and selling. My Fender Super Reverb is my go-to gigging amp. (My Fender Blues Junior is my rehearsal amp). Whether I'm playing Jazz, Classic Rock, Blues, Country or big band tunes…. this Super Reverb produces the best sound there is. My main guitars are a G&L Legacy, and a Gibson ES-137 Custom (blue). .I'm an active working Blues musician, I have real '59 Bassman, '61 Deluxe, '64 Deluxe Reverb and one of these in my current inventory. It's MUCH more responsive and crisper than the old amps. The stock tone is perfect for Blues and Country with all of my stage guitars. I also don't have to worry about it blowing up or getting stolen at a gig. If it disappears it can be replaced.I use a 1970 LP Custom, '79 ES-347 with real '59 Humbuckers, real '57 Strat and real '56 Telecaster. I don't use any effects other than a touch of reverb and the tone just can't be beat with any of my work guitars. It has plenty of volume for outdoor gigs but is also great for smaller indoor venues. It's also been dropped a couple of times with no problems other than having to replace two knobs. Extremely solidly built! My only complaint is that I tore a rotator cuff lifting it onto the stage at a Blues festival a year ago, at 65 lbs it's not light.In my opinion the ultimate, most versitile amplifier money can buy at the moment.

.I bought one of the newer reissues cause I'd just always wanted a super and couldn't afford an original black face. I've been a weekend gigger for about 30 yrs now (mainly classic rock & country) and own quite a few amps. I've always looked for a really good clean sound and I'll get anything else I want out of my pedal board.To be completely honest, the first couple shows I played w/ this amp,I wasn't completely satisfied. Very nice overall sound but this is the first amp I've used with a rectifier tube. Just wasn't diggin the sag and mush at higher volumes. The low notes lost definition and "mushy" is the best way I know to describe it. My old 71 marshall had WAY more headroom. So I called my local amp guy and he hooked me up. I replaced 2 of the stock jensens w/ 2 old celestion vintage 10's I had. (England) celestions. Took out the rectifier tube & replaced it w/ a diode rectifier and replaced the stock tubes w/ JJ's & a rebias. NOW THEN!!!! This thing came alive!!! Way more punchy, More headroom and less fizz at high volumes, But still Fender to the bone. Each to his own but the tube rectifier thing just aint for me. And after these changes I done some research and discovered that Stevie had Dias install solid state rectifiers in his Supers & Vibroverbs also. Try it.. You"ll like it

.The stock tubes that come in this amp are absolute rubbish. I put in some quality valves (JJ), set the bias properly (I doubt this was done from the factory) and this amp just came to life!! I was dumbfounded at the transformation. Just a reminder to me how important tubes are in a tube amp. Sounds absolutely glorious, now. Equal to any of the vintage amps I own. With the factory tubes the sound was overcompressed, harsh, and weak in the bottom end.

The other problem was the speaker cable is very poor quality, and needed to be replaced. The amp was cutting in and out. I am amazed that Fender puts a molded plastic cord in such a crucial position on an amp that costs as much as this one, but, oh well, at least I found it.

One of the speakers died, too. Still sounds good with three, though. This amp was bought brand new.

The last problem that this amp has is common to virtually all newer production Fenders in the past 30 years or so using circuit board construction, rather than point to point. Circuit boards are an elegant way to construct an amp, but, the plastic board mounted jacks Fender uses are of poor quality, and start to go bad after a few years of normal use. They are hard to replace is the other problem, compared to the easy task of replacing a standard guitar-type jack on a vintage amp. Both jacks on my Normal channel need to be replaced. The amp is about 6 years old. I think they could at least take the time to wire in some decent jacks in an amp as nice as this, for a lifetime of use.

In proper order, this amp quickly displays its legendary qualities. I think the 30-40 watt range is magic for tube guitar amps. Loud enough to gig, but not so loud that you can't crank it up a bit and get the goodness happening without deafening people and drowning out everything else. It's still pretty dang loud, though. You have to love the Fender effects as well, the tremolo and reverb. Another chunk of genius from Leo and company.

.I have the Limited Edition Super. Aside from the junky Groove Tubes being bad, and having to rebias the amp when the tubes were replaced, this thing is INCREDIBLE! Anyone that says otherwise obviously has no idea what to do to make them sound better. My amp was biased at 22ma. WAY too cold. Rebiased to 38ma and now I cant hardly tell the difference between it and an original 1965 model. These reissue amp are not junk. Yeah I'm not crazy about the use of not so high end components, but the amp is amazing. I've played through reissues and they start to break up around 4 on the volume. Well they need rebiasing. The amp shouldnt start to break up til around 6 or 7, and they get so SOOOOO sweet when theyre set up right. Dont knock em til you know theyre for sure set up right.

.Well I just got my new 65 re-issue and man was I excited! I couldn't wait to play it after seeing all of the 5 star reviews. I ordered this because I was not willing to wait for my Blues Deville replacement which is on back order. I decided to go with the 65 re-issue Fender Super Reverb. It was daamaged during shipping and MF was quick to try to resolve the problem. Unfortunately it was on back-order. This amp was "made in America" so it must be good right? Well now I'm not so sure.
The tone is kind of strange and compresssed sounding. It gets loud but it's not a sparkling clean sound even at 3 on the volume. When you play chords the tone will mushy up a bit. The reverb has a strange way of bleeding continuously even when you stop playing. Not a crystalline splashy sound you would expect from a vintage re-issue. The chords do not have good note separation.I play loud and like the amp to stay clean until I push it. This thing wimps out way too early in the game. 45 watts should be loud enough but, I'm afraid not with this one. I only use minimal pedals. I use a tube screamer and a Boss CE2 chorus. Very old stuff. Just the way I like it. They both did little to help this amp. This amp has a strange solid state tone to it.
Last week I bought the Blues Deville 4x10 and it was every bit as amazing in tone as people say. It blows this thing away without even breaking a sweat. It may be made in Mexico but if you're like me, you don't care if it has great tone.The Blues Deville has AMAZING tone. This thing can't hang at a real gig. Buy something else. Let Fender know we don't want hype. Just great sounding dependable gear!

.I have the limited edition of this amplifier. AMAZING!! When you first get this amp, you need to have the tubes biased. Fender usually has them set at 22ma from the factory, which makes the amp distort when the volume is on about 4 and the volume is not real loud. Have the bias adjusted to between 32-40 ma (wherever sounds best to you, mine is set at 38ma) and I'd recommend a different set of power tubes too (JJ's are amazing), the preamp tubes are fine if theyre not microphonic, and it'll sing and sound awesome. For a reissue amp these are amazing if you get em set up right. I know it should be done from the factory, but lets face it, they put out WAY too many for the folks to keep up with how theyre set and everything. And rebiasing the amp and changing the power tubes wont affect the warranty on the amp itself. I love mine. Works great with all my pedals, TS9 and TS7 Tubescreamers for 2 different overdirve tones, Marshal Jackhammer for the heavy metal tones, delay, EH chorus, and a rotary speaker emulator and a Vox wah. The amp will do anything you want it to. Best amp I've ever played through.

.I've longed for something better as a hobbyist. Working man with a family, hard to scrape the cash to get away from cheap solid states. Then I was blessed with the ability to purchase this gem. The tone that this baby produces is orgasmic to the ears, for hours I can sit in front of this baby and get lost in my soul. I play an american HSS start with a '70s fuzz pedal through this thing and I could not be more satisfied. You will not go wrong purchasing this amp, its amazing. Even my 10 yr old daughter took a double take and commented on how beautiful it sounds. It will be difficult to top this one.

.I have had this amp for about six months, its the best amp i have ever had. It has a very nice clean sound and also a nice distortion. It can do pretty much any style of music I know of. GREAT AMP BUY IT!!!!!

.I have been playing for over 40 years. I am 58 and started in clubs when I was 16 ( don't tell anyone ) I was fortunate enough to find a used 59 gibson Es335 dot neck and a 63 black face super reverb. The sound of the 2 together was unimaginable and I played for many years throughout Miami and New England. Unfortunately my Super Reverb was stolen and I never replaced it, because I couldn't exactly. They were making Blue faces which were not the same... a couple of months ago a friend called me to come review his new amp and when i got to his house he had a Super Reverb 65 combo...new version. Well I played this thing and could not stop the goose bumps from covering my body. The same sound and power pull from the tubes through the Es 335 came roaring through, in fact even better. I was astounded. Years ago I changed to a Marshall 100 with 1960 bottoms and got used to it but playing this baby was like going home. Most incredible. Any new bluesy, power, rock guitarist that also loves that Fender reverb clean sound will love this amp. I went to all the amps and tried to find that fine tuned sound that I loved but only the the Super Reverb delivers it. Thank you Fender returning my sound to me....
