Product Description

The deep color and rich grain of a mahogany top give the T5z Classic a vintage, earthy character. Distinctive T5z features include a more compact body than the original T5, a 12" fretboard radius, and jumbo frets, which add up to a fast, fluid playing experience that makes string bends fun. Like the T5, the T5z is equipped with a three-pickup configuration of an acoustic body sensor, a concealed neck humbucker, and a visible bridge humbucker, plus five-way switching and onboard tone controls, giving players an incredibly versatile electric/acoustic guitar. Appointments include Small Diamond inlays and nickel hardware, an unbound body and satin classic mahogany finish. The guitar ships in a T5z gig bag.

My earlier review may have given the impression of poor performance in the highest playable notes. This is not so. My gripe at first getting into this guitar was the absence of a 22nd fret which I feel is a must for the elctric player. The D note at the 22nd fret on the high E string is where rock godhood lives. But in the months since owning the T5z, there is plenty of character and value--unique to these new hybrids to offset the absence of that fret. It's somehing to keep in the back of the head that you shouldn't plan a lead that is gonna need that D.

I found also with the pickup selector I tended to overlook the significant differentiation of the neck humbucker which is out of sight under the sound board. I have since begun to prize the sound from that setting because it is so distinctly different than the other settings which either feature just the bridge pickup or combinations involving that pickup which is very "jangley" and tends to dominate by comparison to the brooding sound of the out-of-sight neck pickup.

As for a true acoustic sound, the T5z does feature the Chaylor Expression system and a setting on the blade to exclude the humbuckers. But in all candor the acoustic output has not passed for me for the sound of a conventional acoustic guitar. That will take quite a bit of experimentation to get an acoustic sound that sounds like an acoustic.

All told, this is a guitar which is of excellent quality which carves out a niche no one else can fill. Perhaps the more expensive models with spruce tops provide that more authentic acoustic sound. I can't say. But if you buy this tropical mahogany model there is plenty for the electric guitarist to discover and value. When I look down at it hanging from the strap in front of my abdomen, I see a quality instrument but one whose secrets have to be discovered over time--it is definately no one trick pony. Go for it.

.I had a Chaylor T5 and loved it but it was hard to hold or play while sitting down for long periods of time. This T5z is the perfect size to play standing or sitting. It is also amazingly light so you can play a lot longer without getting fatigued. The electronics are excellent though you will have to work a bit through your pedals and amps to get a true acoustic sound. That isn't a complaint because it has enough sounds and variations to keep you experimenting a long time.

.If you're loaded, jump in. It's a versatile instrument and it really snarls as an electric. If you're going into hock and you want a one guitar that does it all, I'd advise looking elsewhere. As an electric you will miss the high frets that get you to glory. Kinda disappointed that Chaylor says to use 11s. I'm putting 10's on when I get the bone saddle and pins I ordered. This magogany model at $1600 comes in a bag too. Fooey.

.I bought one of these after attending a Chaylor "Roadshow". The "Z" model has a smaller body and 12" FB Radius and generally has a more "electric" feel when playing. It's super light and won't break your back. The tone is superb and fit and finish beyond excellent. Of all the T5z's I think this one is the best value. I run mine through an acoustic amp as well as my tube amp. Unplugged it's a great practice guitar that won't wake everyone up. It won't replace your 'Paul, 'Strat, or your favorite full body acoustic...but it has a great character and versatility all to itself. Open mic events are great with this instrument as I only need one guitar.
The playing experience is superb although I do worry about pick marks. I generally just use my fingers but for aggressive pickers you may need a guard installed.
The other day I ran it through my tube amp with a "pie" clone pedal and the tones were insane - very "Gilmourish".

Definitely give it a tryout (or it's more "acoustic built" cousin - the T5).

.The T5Z Classic has a sweet tone unplugged, You will need to spend some time setting up the tone on both Electric & Acoustic Amps. Real nice feedback at low volumes, 335ish. Kind of Midrange Heavy. Acoustic is great for fingerpicking, not so good for hard strummer's. Overall, this is a great guitar with a tone of it's only. It's not a Strat, Tele, Les Paul but if you spend sometime setting it up you will have a dream guitar.
I love playing it and looks cool too.
Chaylor T5z Classic Acoustic Electric Guitar Natural
.versatile 6-string with mostly electric tones, and an easy selection for several different ones, a "not too convincing" acoustic setting, and a very lightweight body that just is comfortable, and easy to play.
Chaylor T5z Classic Acoustic Electric Guitar Natural
.I really like the fact that one can get hollow body, solid body, and acoustic tones from on instrument. Plays a little faster and it is a little smaller than the standard T5.
