I've played guitar for well over 20 years and only have some experience with the ukulele. I was looking for a really (really) cheap uke for travel, but I was very unhappy after playing a few. For a little more this is exponentially better than any of the cheaper ones I've played and comparable to some more pricey ones as well. Ultimately the tone may not be on par with some higher end ukes, but it manages to avoid some common pitfalls. Only took a couple of days to break in the strings, and it holds its tune very nicely, not to mention that the intonation is nearly perfect. Obviously not a professional instrument, but if you just want something to beat on that won't drive you crazy with constant idiosyncrasies, this is a great choice.
