When Martin introduced the OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition in 2003, people who had heard of John Mayer - and even those who hadn't - were enchanted by the guitar. It featured a fast neck, an ultra-responsive Engelmann spruce soundboard, silver-color line inlays and accents at the bridge and headstock, and distinct fingerboard inlays that proved as popular as the guitarist who designed it.

The limited run of 404 instruments sold out completely. As Mayer's fan base and reputation continued to grow, the number of OM-28JM John Mayer Signature guitars produced began to look awfully small. So, C.F. Martin Co. asked John Mayer if he would collaborate on a second namesake guitar, one that embodies many of the same features and attributes as his first, but one that would be more affordable and more widely available in the tradition of the wildly popular 000-28EC Eric Clapton.

For the OMJM, the East Indian rosewood back and sides are complemented by an incredibly responsive Engelmann spruce soundboard that's enhanced by scalloped scalloped X bracing to produce a rich, warm, full-bodied acoustic voice. The entire body benefits from the flawless look of a gloss finish while the top is also treated with antique toner to provide a gracefully aged aesthetic.

The headstock boasts an Indian rosewood headplate that displays a set of nickel open geared tuning machines with butterbean knobs and an old style Martin logo in silver as opposed to the familiar gold (another nod to the OM-28JM). Appointed similarly to its predecessor, the OMJM features a Style 45 rosette that boasts a lustrous center ring of colorful abalone shell, a bold herringbone top trim, black/white back inlays, a Zig-Zag back strip down the center, grained ivoroid binding throughout, and a traditional faux tortoise pickguard.

'I have owned my Martin OMJM John Mayer special edition for two months. It is incredible. The tone and sustain are beyond measure. Originally I sought a D28 as I yearned for that booming bass. I am not disappointed in the OMJM, plenty of bass for me - perfectly balanced with the highs. The OMJM sounds good (plenty loud) when played unplugged, and is ever so sweet to the ears when plugged in. I know when I pull it out of the plush snug fitting Martin Geib case I will be pickin' for hours as I will not want to put it down. I am continually surprised at the sounds I can make with it both on the high and on the low end. It is a perfect fit for this 5'2" girl with not so long arms. 、

The neck is fast and easy to play and came direct from the factory with a set up perfect for me. I would recommend this guitar for any beginner who can afford a good guitar - why waste your time with a beginner guitar when this one will teach you how to play. I keep a fresh humidifier in the case at all times as I live in Utah where it is an extremely dry climate. I know this special edition guitar will only sound better with age, and is truly a tribute to John Mayer - he would be proud.'
