Product Description

The new GP-10 puts a universe of amazing tones and tunings at your command, all in one compact processor that's affordable and easy to use. With a Roland GK-compatible pickup on your guitar, the GP-10 lets you transform your sound into numerous classic electric and acoustic guitar types, basses, and even analog-modeled synths, including the legendary Roland GR-300. Not stopping there, you have access to instant altered tunings, including popular open tunings, 12-string tones, and "down" tunings that are essential for today's ultra-heavy rock styles. The versatile GP-10 also functions as a full-featured multi-effects processor for both GK and normal pickups, giving you a huge selection of COSM amps and effects for live playing and studio recording. In addition, USB connectivity lets you capture GP-10 tones directly into your DAW, and you can even play computer-based soft synths from your axe with the GP-10's guitar-to-MIDI convertor!

Depending on your needs, the GP-10 is available by itself (GP-10S), or with a Roland GK-3 Divided Pickup and 13-pin cable included in the box (GP-10GK). If you already have a GK-3 on your guitar-or if you have an instrument such as the GC-1 GK-Ready Stratocaster with a GK pickup built in-you'll want to choose the GP-10S. If you want to use the GP-10's modeling functions and you don't have a GK-3, the GP-10GK is the way to go. The GK-3 is quick and easy to install on your favorite electric guitar with no modification needed.

Instant access to down tunings, open tunings, 12-string sounds, and your own custom tunings Instrument modeling powered by COSM technology, including conventional electric, acoustic, and bass guitars, plus sitar, banjo, fretless guitar, and others Analog guitar synthesizer modeling driven by real-time DSP allows you to play expressive, ultra-responsive synth tones Create totally new sounds by blending modeled and normal guitar tones together High-quality COSM amps and multi-effects derived from the GT-100 13-pin input for guitars equipped with a Roland GK-3 Divided Pickup or other GK-compatible pickup Standard 1/4-inch guitar input allows for use of amps and effects with any guitar USB audio/MIDI interface for multi-channel audio recording (including individual string output) and guitar-to-MIDI conversion with GK pickup BOSS TONE STUDIO editor/librarian for Mac/Windows and custom patches available at bosstonecentral.com Available with or without a GK-3 Divided Pickup

It was my hope to extend the capabilities of my Roland GR-55 by purchasing this item. The Roland GR-55 comes with the legendary VG technology. I was hoping that more of this technology would be found in the GP-10. I decided to take a chance and I purchased the GP-10S. I was not disappointed. I spent a few weeks going through every inch of this thing and here is what I found.

The first thing is you don't need the GK-3 pickup to use this device. All the amp models and effects work without the special pickup. However, if you want to take advantage of the guitar modeling and alternate tuning function you will need the Roland GK-3 pickup. This unit will also work with the Roland GK-2A pickup. So if you have a pickup from the guitar synth GR-30 and GR-33 days then it will work just fine. I tested this unit with both pickups and I found no difference in performance. The unit will allow you to make up to 3 different GK pickup profiles. So you can have 3 different GK guitars ready to go.

This unit is a blend of some of the amps and guitar modeling found in the GR-55 with some of the new amps and effects found in the Boss GT-100 or Boss ME-80. Effects like the Harmonizer and the incredible new COSMO amps found in those devices will help you find that most elusive guitar tone. I have a GT-100 and a GR-55 and this unit is a blend of some of the best features of both pieces of gear. Not every guitar and amp model from the GR-55 or amp and effect model from the GT-100 is included, but the ones they chose to include are very good.

The Guitar models sound better to me then the line 6 Variax line. I have two Variax guitars. I made a bunch of open tunings using about 20 presets on the GP-10 and they all sound great. Having abilities to model modern pickups also helps with a more authentic metal sound. There are better synth sounds on the GR-55. I think one of the reasons for this is that this unit seems to be designed to blend guitar tone with synth sounds. It has an incredible sounding chorus. The GP-10 is very rugged and well made.

The one thing that makes this unit stand out is how easy it is to program. Install the drivers then install the Tone Studio program and you are ready to go. I wish the GR-55 was this easy to program. I wish Roland would develop software for the GR-55 similar to the GP-10. I made a Telecaster patch and gave it a great blues guitar tone. Then I tuned the guitar in the patch to open G. This works great for slide guitar. It sounds incredible! They also have a great resonator guitar model that works well for slide guitar.

In short if you are going to use this as a stand-alone pedal then you should make sure you have the GK-3 or GK2-A pickup. If you don't have a guitar with one of those pickup systems then buy the GP-10GK version. It comes with a GK pickup. This pickup sells separately for a lot more than that. If you are not going to use this with the pickup system then I recommend you get the Boss ME-80 or the Boss GT-100 as a lot of the same features can be found in those devices. I use the GP-10 to expand the capabilities of the GR-55. I use the Roland US-20 A/B switch to hook both units together. That way I can use one guitar and take advantage of all the features of both units at the same time.

.I"m using this with a Carvin SH475, it tracks amazing well. The ToneBank idea is cool, you will certainly want to replace some of the strange sounds in this thing. So out of the Carvin I have 3 things going - and this is where it gets a bit complicated. Piezo, mag, and synth all coming down the same 13 pin cable. Separate cables fix this but you'll feel like you're tethered to life support. Just my two-bits worth.
On the flip side there are MANY patches that are STUNNING! When you first power up work with headphones and you will hear what I'm talking about.
The Pat Metheny "sound" is pretty convincing. For a few minutes there I was in "Offramp" land. Quite a few patches sound like alternate strings are being panned to different sides of the patch - just a huge sound. The 12-string sounds are quite lovely - layer in your mag sound and it's just gigantic.
Still working it - very in progress with this machine.
The manual did not cover my questions - so get out on the net and do your homework.
Cheers!
